Surface cracks—geomorphological indicators for late Quaternary halotectonic movements in Northern Germany

چکیده

Loading and unloading effects of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet triggered halotectonic movements in Northern Germany. We present newly detected geomorphological features—termed surface cracks—which indicate a relation between ice sheet-induced salt movement processes. As part Central European Basin System, numerous Zechstein structures are abundant North German Basin. On basis high-resolution digital terrain data, more than 160 cracks were mapped Germany, which grouped into 30 clusters. Almost all occur above top regions structures. An improved age framework for late Quaternary silicic eruptions in northern Central America

Five new stepwise-heating Ar/Ar ages and one new high-sensitivity C date of ash-fall and ash-flow deposits from late Quaternary silicic volcanoes in northern Central America document the eruption rates and frequencies of five major rhyodacite and rhyolite calderas (Atitlán, Amatitlán, Ayarza, Coatepeque, and Ilopango) located north of the basalt, andesite, and dacite stratovolcanoes of the Cent...

Late Quaternary variations in tree cover at the northern foresttundra ecotone

[1] Accurate land cover reconstructions are essential to understanding the past and present biogeochemical and biogeophysical interactions between the land surface and atmosphere and the impacts of these interactions on climate. Here we quantitatively reconstruct late Quaternary shifts in woody cover across the Northern Hemisphere forest‐tundra ecotone, based on a synthesis of Northern Hemisphe...

Biogeochemical indicators of peatland degradation – a case study of a tem- perate bog in northern Germany

Organic soils in peatlands store a great proportion of the global soil carbon pool and can lose carbon via the atmosphere due to degradation. In Germany, most of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from organic soils are attributed to sites managed as grassland. Here, we investigated a land use gradient from near-natural wetland (NW) to an extensively managed (GE) to an intensively managed grass...
